The God of Jacob

The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God:
Psalms 46:7, 146:5 KJV

The bible says quite often that God is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But there are also a lot of scriptures that refer to God as just the God of Jacob and leaves out Abraham and Isaac.

Abraham was a man of great faith. He sacrificed everything for God and did everything God asked him to do no questions asked. He was the father of all nations. He was a mighty man of God. He was greatly blessed.

Isaac didn’t “do much” for God. He didn’t do great works for God the same way his father Abraham did but he was faithful to God. He prayed, he built altars, he sought after God and lived a life that was pleasing to God. He was what you would call the average saint.

And then there’s Jacob. Jacob was a liar and a theif. He lied to Isaac about his identity and stole Esau’s firstborn blessing from him. Then he is forced to flee his newly blessed household in fear of his brother killing him. He didn’t seek after the will of God and yet he was still blessed.

Yet the bible says “I am the God of Jacob”. God is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob or in other words, God is the God of the exceptional, the average, and the God of the messed up.

I love that God is not just the God of the perfect and that He is not just the God of the average but He is also the God of the messed up. He is the kind of God that sees brokenness and sin and wants to intervene and be the God of that situation. God wants to be the God of those who don’t have it all figured out and He’s not ashamed to be identified as that God!

But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is NOT ASHAMED TO BE CALLED THEIR GOD: for he hath prepared for them a city.
Hebrews 11:16 KJV (This scripture was talking about Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob)

God is not ashamed to be the God of Jacob. God is not ashamed to be called the God of those who struggle and mess up. He is not ashamed to be your God!

Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God:
Psalms 146:5 KJV
