David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and went to her and lay with her; and she gave birth to a son, and David named him Solomon. And the Lord loved the child; and He sent word through Nathan the prophet, and he named him Jedidiah (beloved of the Lord ) for the sake of the Lord [who loved the child].
2 SAMUEL 12:24-25 AMP
The story of David and Bathsheba is one crazy story of love, betrayal, sin, and forgiveness. Joab and Israel’s army went out to fight the ammonites but David stayed in Jeruselum. David was out on the palace roof one evening during the battle and saw Bathsheba bathing. Her husband was with the israelite army in battle. She was very beautiful to David and he sent for her to come to the palace and she became pregnant.
David called for Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah, to come home from battle and to spend time with his wife to cover up his sin but he did not. So David sent word to Joab, the commanding officer, to place Uriah in the front line of battle to be killed. Then Bathsheba became David’s wife.
God was not happy with what David had done. So he sent Nathan the prophet to him to tell him that his son that Bathsheba was carrying would die. The baby was born and became very sick. David fasted and prayed. You can read Psalms 51. Its the prayer David prayed over his sick baby. But sin will never go unpunished. The baby died during David’s fasting. But David got up and worshipped the Lord.
But God heard David’s prayer of repentance and blessed them with a second baby. Bathsheba gave birth to Solomon. God loved Solomon and sent word through Nathan and named him Jedidiah.
Jedidiah is two names. Translated they are Jedid (beloved) and Yah (the name of God) which put together means “beloved of Yah”. Jedidiah was first named Solomon which means “the man of peace”. David named him this as a sign from God that peace would be restored to Israel. When Solomon recieved the second name, it was a sign of God’s favor.
When God punished David for his sin through the death of his child, it was not only a punishment but also a way to correct David; to show him his way was wrong and how he can change so that type of sin does not happen again. God gave David a second chance just like He gave Solomon a second name.
God does the same for us. We were born into sin. But God corrects us and gives us a new name. We now have His name applied to our lives. Solomon was given a second name to show David God’s love for him. God applies His name to us as a second name to show His love for us. We are all named Jedidiah after we are reborn. We are all beloved of the Lord.
