And he said, Thus saith the Lord , Make this valley full of ditches. For thus saith the Lord , Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts. And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord : he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand. II Kings 3:16-18
This scripture takes place during a time in the Israelites life where they were sinning against the Lord under the reign of King Jehoram, the son of Ahab. At this time, the king of Moab rebelled against king Jehoram. So Jehoram decided to go into battle against the Moabites. As him and his army were on their way to battle (with absolutely no water with them) during the seven day journey, Jehoshaphat remembered there was a prophet near by, Elisha. They wanted a blessing from him.
So Elisha told them to dig ditches in the valley and the Lord would fill them with water even though no rain would come.
That would be hard! Having gone for so long without water and then having to get down in the valley and start digging ditches in the hot blazing sun! I wouldn’t want to do that! God even said, “you won’t see wind or rain but you’ll see those ditches full of water”. That requires a lot of faith and trust!
But sure enough, the next day, the ditches were filled with water after they gave an offering. God used this not only to satisfy the isrealites’ thirst but to also defeat their enemy.
When the moabites rose up to go to battle, they saw the ditches but thought they were full of blood. They mistook the water for blood and assumed the isrealites had killed each other. When the moabites came to the isrealites camp, the isrealites rose up and began to fight the moabites causing them to flee and were killed even in their own country.
The thing that blows me away about this whole story is verse 18. It says “And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord”. This does not sound light to me! This sounds huge! For God to say “eh, it’s no big deal” blows me away! We serve a God for who nothing is impossible!
Sometimes I get caught up in my current circumstances and they seem so overwhelming but I look at this story. I’d much rather deal with what I’m going through then what they had to go through and if God considers that situation a light thing, then just imagine how little your current situation is to God. Nothing is too difficult for our God to take care of. Our problems are so tiny to the almighty God and we should not worry about them if our awesome God is not worried about them. The capacity of His blessings for us are totally endless!
