I was asked to speak about Acts 11. When I was asked, I was thinking ok, awesome. But as I read Acts 11, I was thinking oh boy, what am I going to pull out of this?
Because Acts 11 is basically Peter defending himself about why he went to cornelius the gentile’s house. He was telling them about how the gentiles had received the holy ghost like they did. So I read it over and over and over until verse 15 popped out at me which says “And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning”. After I read that, I thought, wait, what is it that he spoke? So I jumped to chapter 10 to find out and Peter was talking about Jesus. He was telling them how Jesus went around doing good and then died on the cross but resurrected and is alive and how he ascended into heaven and
then verse 44 says, “while peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word” I then started to think about what me and Sis. Melissa were talking about the day before, the power in the word. As we were talking, I could feel the presence of God and something in my spirit was telling me this is gonna be your next message.
So, when I read that verse, and it actually hit me, I got excited. Because Peter was talking about Jesus, Jesus is the word Himself! Everyone who heard the word received the Holy Ghost or received new life.
I just want to start off with how powerful the word is.
Hebrews 4:12 says For the word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
The bible is the most powerful book in the world. It was given to us to use for teaching, rebuking, and correcting. Every problem we come against, we can find the answer in the word of God. It is the only book that has gone through the fire and through the flood and is still alive. It is what keeps us and causes us to grow. It is what keeps us separated from the world. It is the only book that has the power to be used as a weapon. It has never been defeated. It is one of many God’s gifts to us and we can use this weapon to defeat every problem we come against.
Now there’s the power in our tongues. James calls the tongue a fire. He compares it to a tiny spark that can start forest fires but also to a rudder on a ship that changes the direction of the boat. The tongue is tiny but mighty. Our tongues have the power to destroy someone’s life with just a few words. But our tongues also have the power to speak life and to change lives. Look at Jericho, it was their voices that made the walls come down.
If you take the power of the word and combine it with the power of the tongue, that’s when the miraculous can happen.
Why do you think God chose the foolishness of preaching to save lives? It’s the power of God’s word and the power of the tongue working together!
When God created the world, He did not snap his finger. He did not wave a magic wand. But He combined the power of His word and the power of His tongue to bring things into existence. All He had to do was say, let there be light and then there was light.
When Peter was speaking God’s word, the holy ghost fell on everyone who heard it. When he combined the power of his tongue and the power of the word, a fire was ignited into the gentiles. Life was spoken into that place.
God has given us this same power.
Jesus uses this power in the desert when He is being tempted by the devil. Every time the devil told Jesus to do something, Jesus responded with the word.
When the devil told him to throw himself off the city and let the angels catch Him,
Jesus said it is written, thou shalt not tempt the Lord.
The devil told him to turn stone into bread,
Jesus said “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God”.
The devil said bow down and worship me and all the world will be yours but
Jesus said get behind me Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
We need to do the same thing when the devil tempts us. When the devil tells you young ladies that you are ugly and worthless,
you can say it is written, I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I am more precious than rubies.
When he tells us that we will never amount to anything,
we can say it is written. I am a chosen generation, a royal priesthood. I will lift up mine eyes to the hills for wence cometh my help. God has a plan and purpose for my life.
And when he tells us that we will be defeated and that we will never overcome,
we can tell him, it is written! No weapon formed against me shall prosper. I will overcome by the blood of the lamb and by the word of my testimony. Then begin to tell your testimony as if you are telling someone what the Lord has done. I cannot tell you how many times I have done this and how many times the devil instantly left me alone because of it.
There is a power we hold in our voices that no other creation has. We have our words! We have the power to speak life and to speak things into existence. For example, Lazarus.
Everyone saw it as a dead situation. But Jesus saw a situation that just needed some life spoken into it. That’s what He did, He spoke life into that dead situation. All Jesus had to say was Lazarus, come forth. ●Sometimes we think well that’s what Jesus did, He’s God, He has that power, I’m too insignificant to do something like that. But Jesus said in John 14:12 “The works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do.”
You have the power to speak life!! Every day we walk into dead situation schools, dead situation homes, dead situation jobs but we have the power to speak life into those places!
Just like sister Ashley told us on teachers sunday, God has given us our homes, our schools, our jobs, we should not have to go there and be miserable! I believe God wants us to speak life to the places we go!
When sis. Ashley spoke that message, it really hit me because I work here at the daycare but sometimes it’s draining, those kids will ware you out sometimes. Before the service started, I was praying Lord, I work at your church, my job should be full of joy! But these kids drain me! And then she spoke that message. The next day when I got there, that’s the nice thing about opening, you have lots of time to pray! But, I began to plead the blood on all of the children that will walk through the door and on the building and I started speaking life into that place! I noticed a huge different in the atmosphere! I could feel life and joy.
There is power in our words! I want you to understand the power of speaking positive and speaking life and speaking the word. It will change the course of your day. If you wake up and say, man, today is going to be a bad day, then sorry, but you’re probably going to have a bad day. But when you wake up and say, this is the day the Lord hath made, I will rejoice and be glad in it! Then you will probably have an awesome day! Hannah always keeps me on my toes with this. I’ll say something like I think I’m getting a cold and she’ll tell me, “don’t claim that for yourself girl!” It really makes me think twice about what I am speaking throughout the day.
When we start speaking life, we will start seeing life! If you want revival in your school, speak life in that place, plead the blood of Jesus on everyone you come in contact with. If you want revival in your family, speak it! Speak life! The word and our voices are our most powerful weapons combined.
If you want to see change, then speak it. There’s a book called The Fourth Dimension and the author tells a story about a doctor who had told him about the power in the spoken word. The doctor told him that there have been recent findings in neurology which indicate that the speech center in the brain has control over all the other nerves in our bodies. The speech nerve center has so much power that speaking can give you control over your body. For example, If you keep saying, ‘I’m going to become weak,’ then all your nerves receive that message and they begin to prepare themselves to become weak. So think of it this way, if you are sick, and you keep telling everyone I’m sick, then your body responds to that. But just imagine if instead of saying I’m sick, you told everyone, I’m healed according to 1 Peter 2:24. The bible says whosoever controls the tongue, controls the whole body.
There’s a book I’m reading by Joy Haney called the power in speaking positive and she tells a story of a woman who had a cancerous growth on her neck. Every morning she looked in the mirror and saw the growth and would speak to it to leave her body. She did this every single day until one day, she got up, looked in the mirror and saw that it was gone.
Sometimes the Lord is going to wait for you to speak it before He takes care of it Himself.
About a year and a half ago, I started to have panic attacks at night. I’d get in bed and start to fall asleep but then fear would wrap itself around my chest like a snake. It happened every single night. Some nights were better than others. Some nights I would fall asleep only to have one of these attacks wake me up. I tried everything to get rid of them. I prayed and prayed, would read the word before going to sleep, prayed over my pillow and bed. I stuck prayer cloths in my pillow and in teddy bears and would squeeze that bear and my bible while trying to fall asleep and nothing worked until a few months ago when I started to speak to the fear. I would say, “fear! I rebuke you in the name of Jesus!!” and when I did this, the fear immediately left and I have not had a panic attack since.
There is power in the spoken word! You have power!
