And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you. Luke 17:6
And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.
When we hear about the phrase “faith like a mustard seed”, we often think of the size of the mustard seed. It doesn’t take much faith to move the mountains or have God work in your life. But that’s all we think about when it comes to the mustard seed. We think of its size and that’s it. But, I bet there’s a lot about the mustard seed you didn’t know.
Now days, scientists can make hybrid vegetables that have a type of built in bug repellant. They take the DNA of the plant and change it so it is undesirable to bugs and insects. Scientists take part of another plants DNA and introduce it to the plant they’re working on. The plant they’re working on becomes “sick” by introducing it to a virus and then it accepts the other plant’s DNA creating a hybrid plant. But scientists have found that mustard seeds cannot do this. They refuse to accept viruses or any other DNA. Mustard seeds will never be anything other than what it was created to be.
Sin can be considered to be a virus. It will try to make us something we are not. It makes us spiritually unhealthy and sick. If the kingdom of God is related to be like a mustard seed, it makes sense. Mustard seeds refuse to accept viruses and so does the kingdom of God. No sin can enter into heaven. Revelation 21:27 says And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life. Don’t let sin come into your life, be like the mustard seed, refuse to be what sin wants you to be and be who God created you to be.
Mustard seeds will only take out the nutrients they need to grow, they don’t take anything else out of the soil. They also grow to be a very huge tree. We should do the exact same. We should not fill our lives with things of this world. If we want our faith the be like a mustard seed, we must only take in what is necessary for growth. When we do this, oir faith will grow to be very large and we will be very fruitfull.
