Skirts

If there is one thing God desires in His church, it’s modesty. God designed women to be set apart from man and how do we achieve this? You got it, our style. Well at least, our apparel.

Deuteronomy 22:5 says “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so [are] abomination unto the LORD thy God.” What pertains to a woman is a skirt or a dress and what pertains to a man is of course pants. If a woman wears what pertains to a man, or what has been intended for a man to wear, she is an abomination unto the Lord, and likewise for the man to wear a skirt or a dress. In today’s society though, many say, “oh well these are girl pants, I got them in the girl section” but no matter where you found the pants, pants are still pants. Women aren’t to wear what pertains to a man. The whole point of this verse is that a woman should be able to be identified as a woman first glance by the way she is dressed.

But many would argue, Deuteronomy is in the old testament and the old testament is over and we no longer have to live by those rules. But this law was a moral law, and still exists outside of culture or dispensations of time. It’s not only the skirts that set us apart, it’s also the way we dress, with modesty.  1 Timothy 2:9 says “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.”  The Greek word translated “apparel” here is katastole, which literally means a lowering, letting down dress (bible hub). So just how low does that garment need to come? Right below the knee is perfect. When the skirt is below the knee, no one can see up the skirt when you sit down and you’re also dressing the way priests did. Genesis 28:42 says “… from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach.” Yes I understand this was intended for priests to wear but aren’t we also priests and should dress like priests? Because 1 Peter 2:9 says, “But ye are a chosen generation, a ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”

Skirts and modesty are just away to reveal that we belong to Godand that we are set apart. We should be seeking for the attention of God by our dress and not the attention of man. Besides, who doesn’t love wearing skirts and feeling good about themselves?
